Wild card and former top-10 star Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia outlasted Belgian qualifier Kristof Vliegen 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, while Argentine Juan Monaco topped France's Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 7-5, another Argentine, Juan Ignacio Chela, got past Russian Igor Kunitsyn 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, and Italian Andreas Seppi whipped Austrian Jurgen Melzer 6-2, 6-0 to set-up a second-round affair with former world No. 1 superstar Roger Federer. Chela is rewarded with a second- rounder against four-time defending Monte-Carlo champ Rafael Nadal.
Additional Day-2 wins came for Romanian Victor Hanescu, Spaniard Marcel Granollers, Frenchman Marc Gicquel, Spanish qualifier Oscar Hernandez, and German qualifier Andreas Beck. Hanescu will face U.S. Open runner-up and Miami champion Andy Murray in the round of 32.
The reigning world No. 1 Nadal beat the former top-ranked Federer in the previous three finals here. Nadal, who is seeking a fifth straight Monte- Carlo title this week, is also trying to become the first No. 1 seed to win the championship here since Juan Carlos Ferrero accomplished the feat back in 2003.
This is one of three outdoor clay-court Masters 1000 tournaments, joining ones in Rome and Madrid.
The top-eight seeds here, highlighted by the Australian Open, Wimbledon and French Open champion Nadal, the U.S. Open titlist Federer, Novak Djokovic and Murray, received opening-round byes.
The 2009 Monte-Carlo winner will collect $580,500.

“The #1 thing for us is to make a line for each game that creates good two-way action. We do this by drawing from past experiences and applying them to current situations. People think it’s much more complicated, but it’s not. “Divided action means the sportsbook is guaranteed a profit on the game because of the fee charged to the bettor (called juice or vig – typically $11 bet to win $10).
Power ratings are the oddsmaker’s value of each team and are used as a guide to calculate a "preliminary" pointspread on an upcoming game. The power ratings are adjusted after each game a team plays. Examples of non-game factors that would require an adjustment to a team's power rating are key player injuries and player trades.
Once a game’s power rating based pointspread is determined, the oddsmaker will make adjustments to that line after considering each team's most recent games played and previous games played against that opponent. Also, adjustments are made after reading each team’s local newspapers to get a sense of what the coaches & players are thinking going into the game.Since the oddsmaker’s ultimate goal is equally dividing the sports betting action, public perception and sportsbook betting patterns must be taken into account. For example, the public might have heavy betting interest week after week on a popular college football betting team such as USC.
